That’s right, I saw Jay-Z buying caviar in Harlem
I swear. Then he went to Citarella.

Fiendishly clever

George Clooney is organizing a grass-roots effort to take on the Gawker Stalker Web site, which posts sightings of celebrities as they occur, enabling gawkers and stalkers to track down celebrities. How’s he doing it? Via his publicist, Stan Rosenfield, of course.

“There is a simple way to render these guys useless,” Clooney advised in an e-mail his publicist sent out to various other show-business publicists.

“Flood their Web site with bogus sightings. Get your clients to get 10 friends to text in fake sightings of any number of stars. A couple hundred conflicting sightings and this Web site is worthless. No need to try to create new laws to restrict free speech. Just make them useless. That’s the fun of it. And then sit back and enjoy the ride.”

Then again, if everything that is fake was considered “useless,” 99 percent of L.A. residents would suddenly find themselves out of work

The Gawker folks were so smug about their bad idea, they deserve this. They seemed not to understand what could happen with their Stalker Alert service. Yeah, it was a cute idea, but it could get someone killed. Clooney’s idea is clever and low-impact.

I cannot imagine why a room full of adults would not understand the consequences of their actions, but Nick Denton and his crew were so happy with their shiny new toy, they didn’t think there could be problems from it.
